richard hughes follows Samuel Martinez, the 17-year-old Colombian midfielder whose April performances for Colombia at the CONMEBOL Under-17 championship in Paraguay drew reported interest from Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Martinez, who has not made his professional debut for Atletico Nacional, emerged from the tournament as one of the clearest young playmakers on show.
Paraguay drew European scouts
European scouts were in Paraguay for the CONMEBOL Under-17 championship in April, and Martinez gave them a profile that stood out quickly. His lanky frame, upright running style and deceptive speed in short bursts were turned into short viral clips and reshared on X, helping the midfielder move from tournament standout to a name linked with three of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Those reports connected him to Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich after several impressive performances. Bayern Munich appeared to be in pole position to sign Martinez, according to his agent Daniel Neumuller, after Colombia beat Argentina 4-0 in the final in Paraguay.
Atletico Nacional academy
Martinez has thrived within Atletico Nacional's elite academy development structure, but he remains before his senior debut for the club. That gap leaves the next step clear: a teenager who has already drawn comparisons to Kaka must now turn academy promise into professional minutes before any move can become more than a report.
The tournament also fitted a familiar Colombian pattern. Colombia continues to produce players who thrive in the central corridor of the pitch, with Carlos Valderrama, James Rodriguez and Juan Fernando Quintero serving as examples in the background to Martinez’s rise.
For now, the practical question for clubs is not whether Martinez drew attention in Paraguay — he did — but which of the interested sides can turn that attention into a concrete move after the 4-0 final win over Argentina and the surge of interest that followed.
