Rey Mysterio Jr. was named AAA’s new general manager on Saturday, May 23, 2026, during the promotion’s live show from Mexico City. The move came one week before Noche de los Grandes and changed the on-screen leadership going into the event.
AAA President Marisela Peña made the announcement on a card that also included Laredo Kid’s AAA World Cruiserweight Championship defense against Rey Fenix. The new role immediately put Mysterio at the center of the promotion’s biggest upcoming decisions, including Fenix’s chance to get another shot at the title at Noche de los Grandes.
Peña Names Rey Mysterio Jr.
Peña introduced Mysterio as the promotion’s new general manager while AAA aired on Fox in Latin America and on YouTube and Facebook worldwide. The show was presented live from Mexico City on Saturday, May 23, 2026, with the leadership change landing before the company’s next major stretch of shows.
That announcement also settled the field after Dorian Roldán and John Bradshaw Layfield had both been described as hopeful candidates for the job. Rey Mysterio then stepped into a role that carried immediate weight, because the promotion was already moving toward Noche de los Grandes and its two-week run starting the following week.
Laredo Kid Retains Against Rey Fenix
Laredo Kid kept the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship after defeating Rey Fenix on the same show. He used a low blow and then a frog splash to pin Fenix, ending the defense with the title still in his hands.
After the match, Mysterio approached Laredo Kid and said he was disappointed in Laredo. Kid answered with a simple line: “a win is a win.” The exchange tied the title result directly to the new general manager’s first major call and set the tone for how he may handle the championship picture.
Noche de los Grandes Matches
Mysterio said Fenix would get another shot at Laredo Kid at Noche De Los Grandes, which begins next week as a two-week event. That puts the cruiserweight title back in motion almost immediately after the Mexico City show, with the new general manager already shaping the card.
The event will also feature a Six Woman Tag Match, War Raiders versus Pagano and Psycho Clown for the AAA Tag Team Championships, and Real El Grande Americano against OG El Grande Americano in a mask-versus-mask match. For AAA, the announcement of Rey Mysterio Jr. did not just add a new face in the office; it changed the person making the decisions as the promotion heads into one of its busiest stretches.
