Flamengo vs Palmeiras standings come into sharper focus Sunday morning at the Estadio do Maracana, where the teams meet in round 17 of the Brasileirao separated by four points at the top of the table. Flamengo are chasing the gap; Palmeiras are trying to keep their cushion intact before the World Cup break.

Maracana pressure for Flamengo

Flamengo arrive with home form that has kept them in the race. They have won nine of their last 10 matches at the Maracana and are unbeaten there in 2026, plus they have taken nine of their last 10 home games overall. That run gives Leonardo Jardim’s side a clear platform, especially with the table still tight enough that one result can change the top end quickly.

Their latest league outing finished 1-1 with Athletico Paranaense last weekend, and Pedro rescued a point with an 84th-minute equaliser. The forward has seven goals in the Brasileirao this season and 15 in all competitions, which leaves Flamengo relying on a player who has already turned one dropped result into a draw.

Palmeiras bring the league edge

Palmeiras lead Flamengo by four points and have spent the season building their edge through defense. Abel Ferreira’s team has conceded 13 goals in Serie A, the best mark in the league, and it has gone unbeaten in 11 league matches with seven wins and four draws. Ferreira also reached 389 matches in charge, the most by any coach in Palmeiras history.

That form has survived one setback and one warning sign. Palmeiras drew 1-1 with Cruzeiro last Sunday, then lost 1-0 to Cerro Porteno at the Allianz Parque in the Copa Libertadores on Thursday. Flaco Lopez remains their top scorer with 11 goals, but the club’s title hold has come more from control at the back than from a heavy scoring load.

Recent meetings favor Flamengo

The head-to-head record adds another layer to the gap at the top. Palmeiras have lost their last three meetings with Flamengo, including the 2025 Libertadores final and both Brasileiro meetings last season. They have also struggled at the Maracana over a longer stretch, failing to win 41 of their last 56 visits there.

Flamengo enter without Giorgian de Arrascaeta, who is out while recovering from a fractured collarbone. Danilo is suspended after his red card against Athletico Paranaense, while Gonzalo Plata is doubtful because of a knee problem. Jorginho missed last weekend’s match through suspension and is expected back alongside Evertton Araujo in midfield, while Pulgar has returned to training and Lucas Paqueta is making significant progress in recovery from a left thigh injury.

For a match built around a four-point split, the margins are already plain. Flamengo need the Maracana to keep acting like a lift; Palmeiras need their league shape to survive a ground and an opponent that have both caused them problems before.
