chl opened with a shutout as Christian Kirsch stopped 23 shots and Kitchener beat host Kelowna 5-0 on May 23, 2026 at Prospera Place. The win gave the OHL champion an immediate edge in the Memorial Cup round-robin and left the Rockets chasing from the first period in front of a sold-out crowd.
Christian Kirsch sets the tone
Dylan Edwards scored just under five minutes into the first period for the game’s opening goal, and Kitchener led 1-0 after 20 minutes while holding a 14-6 edge on the shot clock.
That start put Kelowna on the back foot before the home side could settle in, and Kirsch’s clean sheet gave Kitchener a margin that never narrowed.
Kelowna’s lineup had more to prove
Peyton Kettles returned to the Rockets lineup after missing more than six months following shoulder surgery, and Mazden Leslie made his Memorial Cup debut at forward, but the host club still could not find a way through.
Harrison Boettiger made several saves in the second period, and Jack Pridham later fed Jared Woolley for Kitchener’s second goal late in that frame.
Physical play at Prospera Place
Dawson Gerwing fought Woolley in the first period after delivering several hits, and Nate Corbet fought Carson Campbell in the third after Leslie was crunched by a trio of Rangers.
Kelowna head coach Derrick Martin said, “I thought there was a lot of energy in the building” and “I thought that, as a group, we needed to do more with the puck early on in the hockey game.”
He added, “It took us a long time to get any type of flow to our game going on with the puck, and when you’re chasing and you’re giving a team like that enough opportunities at the net, you’re going to pay the price.”
The unanswered question is whether Kelowna can reset its puck management before the round-robin pressure tightens, because the opener already showed how little room the host has when it falls behind early.
