Municipal took a 4-1 lead over Xelajú MC into xelajú mc - municipal after winning the first leg of the Clausura 2026 final at El Trébol. That left the Guatemala City club with several paths to title number 33, while Xelajú MC needed a sharp response in Quetzaltenango.
El Trébol Set the Margin
Christian Hernández, Jefry Bantes, Pedro Altán and Alejandro Cabeza scored in the first leg, giving Municipal the cushion that shaped the second match. Mario Acevedo had his side prepared to manage that advantage, not chase another open game.
The scoreline also forced Xelajú MC into a narrow equation. It had to win by four goals in 90 minutes to take the championship outright, while a three-goal win would only push the series into extra time.
Mario Camposeco Pressure
The return leg was scheduled for Saturday 23 May at 20:00 hours at estadio Mario Camposeco in Quetzaltenango. Municipal could still be champion by winning, drawing or even losing by up to two goals, which gave the first-leg result real control over the tie.
Xelajú MC entered the match without Jorge Aparicio, who was suspended after the first leg. Municipal had no suspended players for the return leg, a cleaner position for Acevedo as he tried to see the series through.
Title Number 33
Municipal’s position was simple: avoid a collapse by three goals or more, and the club would keep its grip on the final. A three-goal loss would send the series to extra time and possibly penalties, but anything short of that still left it in command of the title race.
The return match was available live on Tigo Sports, giving supporters a direct view of whether Municipal could finish off the series or whether Xelajú MC could drag the final beyond 90 minutes.
