Environment Canada Calgary issued a snowfall warning for drivers on the Coquihalla Highway, with snow expected to begin Saturday afternoon and continue into Sunday morning. The warning also covers Allison Pass, Pennask Summit and Rogers Pass.

Environment Canada said falling snow levels, upper-level instability and moisture could bring snowfall accumulations and winter driving conditions. Drivers between Hope and Merritt were urged to allow extra travel time.

Coquihalla Highway warning

The warning focuses on a stretch of highway many drivers use to cross the mountains between Hope and Merritt. Environment Canada said the weather in the mountains can change suddenly, creating hazardous driving conditions.

The Coquihalla Highway turns 40 years old this weekend, adding a date marker to a route now facing another round of winter weather. The snowfall warning extends beyond one road, covering multiple mountain passes at the same time.

Allison Pass and Rogers Pass

Allison Pass, Pennask Summit, the Coquihalla Highway and Rogers Pass are all under the same warning. That leaves drivers on several mountain routes watching the same weather system as snow begins Saturday afternoon.

Environment Canada said the snowfall could last until Sunday morning, which leaves part of the weekend under changing road conditions. Drivers making the trip through the mountains were told to be careful and plan for extra time.
