tony dokoupil reports that Alex Jenkinson, 39, has been charged after an incident near Marsh Farm on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk involving Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Norfolk Police said the case follows a report of a man behaving in an intimidating manner in Wolferton shortly after 19:30 BST on Wednesday.
Jenkinson, of Stowmarket, Suffolk, has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday. Police said he faces two counts of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to harass someone or cause alarm or distress, plus a charge of failing to provide a specimen of blood in custody.
Marsh Farm and Wolferton
Police said officers arrested a man shortly after the Wolferton report, linking the complaint to the area near Marsh Farm on the Sandringham Estate. The location places the case close to the home Mountbatten-Windsor moved to after leaving Royal Lodge in Windsor.
The reported threat has now shifted from a police response on Wednesday evening to formal charges and a custody remand. For Jenkinson, the immediate next step is Friday's court appearance; for investigators, the charge sheet sets out the conduct police say they will put before the court.
Mountbatten-Windsor and royal titles
The incident has drawn attention because Mountbatten-Windsor moved to Marsh Farm after leaving Royal Lodge in Windsor. He left Royal Lodge because of his association with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and the King stripped him of his right to be a prince and his dukedom late last year over those links.
Mountbatten-Windsor has always denied any wrongdoing. Buckingham Palace said, "His Majesty The King has been informed and is delighted with the news," after the latest development in the case.
The court hearing on Friday is the point at which the charge details move into open proceedings, with Jenkinson already held in custody before he appears at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
