Reports of a swatting incident disrupted classes at several Kansas schools on Thursday, starting at Cheylin High School in Bird City around 10:30 a.m. when the school received a phone call saying a gunman was on the way. Cheylin locked down, and students and staff were moved to safety before the school dismissed early.
Local law enforcement later determined there was no active threat at Cheylin High School. The school said it will have counseling services available to students in the coming days, and the incident remains under investigation.
Cheylin High School response
Cheylin officials notified local law enforcement and activated the school crisis emergency plans after the call. The school was secured with local law enforcement and emergency response agencies, and all students and staff were accounted for before they were reunified with parents.
Western Plains High School in Ransom was evacuated after a threat there. Ness County EMS, the Trego County Sheriff’s Office, the Wakeeney Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the evacuation.
El Dorado High School timeline
El Dorado police were called around 11:35 a.m. to investigate a potential threat at El Dorado High School. The district said the potential threat did not include the inside of the school, and out of caution it locked all doors and notified parents and caregivers.
The situation at El Dorado High School was resolved about 15 minutes later, and classes continued as scheduled. The threat reports disrupted several Kansas schools on the same day, but the source did not say whether the incidents were connected.
