“This game feels like the cup final for me.” Merson said that in his preview of the semi-final, and he went further: “It has the feeling of winner takes all with either Braga or Freiburg to come.”
He added: “That means the winner could well be booking themselves a spot in the Champions League.” That is the cleanest read on the tie. The prize is not just a place in the final in Istanbul on May 20, but a route that could carry the winner toward Europe’s top competition.
Forest Carry The First-Leg Lead
Nottingham Forest arrive with the edge after a 1-0 first-leg win, sealed by Chris Wood’s second-half penalty. That leaves Aston Villa chasing the tie at home on Thursday, with no margin for a slow start.
Forest’s position is stronger than a narrow scoreline suggests. They are 90 minutes away from their first European final in 46 years, and the pressure on Villa is sharpened by the fact that Merson had been convinced they would beat Forest over two legs before the opening match.
Villa Still Have Two Paths
Villa’s weekend selection added another layer to the picture. They rested many players against Spurs on Sunday, and they still had a chance to wrap up Champions League qualification with that match before turning back to the semi-final.
Even if Thursday goes against them, their league route is still alive. Villa have three games remaining — Liverpool, Burnley and Man City — and Merson pointed to Burnley as another chance to finish the job.
