Novo Nordisk said semaglutide will reach U.S. adults with type 2 diabetes as an oral Ozempic pill starting Monday, May 4, 2026. The drug will be available through more than 70,000 pharmacies nationwide and select telehealth providers, putting a pill form in front of patients who have used the brand mainly as an injection.

May 4 and 70,000 pharmacies

The company is moving the oral product into the market under the Ozempic name even though it works similarly to Rybelsus, its earlier oral semaglutide tablet. Novo Nordisk said the branding is more familiar to patients, a commercial choice that could widen demand for a diabetes drug already sold in oral form since FDA approval in 2019.

Mir Ali, bariatric surgeon and medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, said: “While the oral form of semaglutide has been available for years as Rybelsus, the Ozempic branding is more widely recognized, which may lead to increased patient requests,” He also said, “Additionally, because the oral form has a longer shelf life, it may offer logistical advantages for certain prescribing patterns,”

1.5 mg to 9 mg

The updated formulation will come in 1.5 mg, 4 mg, and 9 mg strengths, replacing the older Rybelsus tablets sold in 3 milligram, 7 mg, and 14 mg doses. Novo Nordisk said the new pill is more bioavailable and offers the same efficacy and safety profile as the original formulation in a smaller pill, with people taking 3 mg now directed to take 1.5 mg.

That smaller dose range gives prescribers a direct switch option, but the clinical tradeoff remains part of the picture. Research cited in the context says injectable semaglutide achieves significantly greater HbA1c reductions than oral forms in type 2 diabetes, while adverse events occur more frequently with oral semaglutide. The daily pill may still fit patients who prefer something easier to take, transport, and store than a weekly injection.

Rybelsus to Ozempic

Both injectable Ozempic and oral Rybelsus contain semaglutide and have approval for type 2 diabetes, but Novo Nordisk is leaning on the Ozempic name for a broader audience. For adults filling prescriptions after May 4, the practical change is simple: the oral semaglutide option will be easier to find at the counter, and the dose they receive will depend on whether they are starting fresh or moving over from the older Rybelsus tablets.
